Bang gone bang

A plain speaking judge who cuts through the bullsh**t. This is the right decision in my view, based on the reported facts. People go on about the lack of laws or sanctions, but in many cases the law and sanctions are fine it’s the implementation and enforcement of them in practice (or lack of it) that is the problem.

Of course now whether the law goes one further and punishes individual directors is left to the DOCE. He who just found in the Fyffes case that there was just an error of judgment and let the directors off notwithstanding that the file came his way following a damning Supreme Court decision.

In fairness to Paul Appleby, it wasn't he who found in favour of the Directors, it was the High court inspector who was appointed to carry out the review.

The Revenue returned four post dated cheques to me recently (VAT & Paye) spread over a month, said i hadnt agreed with them a payment scheme, i should rack up a 1.3 million bill and perhaps then they would be more ''comfortable'', strange land this.

These two clowns epitomise everything that was wrong with this country for the last 10-15 years. Before I go into my rant, please do not dare and tell me that they were lovely fellows and were only trying their best.

These morons knew exactly what they were at and instead of trying to become celebrities, they should have spent more time concentrating on their business. I used to see them driving around the streets of Dublin in a red ferrarri in first gear so that the entire population could hear them coming. They were on every magazine as the people that people should strive to be like. They thought that they were friends with all the hob knobs of Dublin elite.

How in anyones right mind, could you put a refurb into a building that cost as much as Residence did that you didnt even own and expect to make money out of it. You cant

How can you expect to not pay your employees PAYE and expect that no one will notice and more importantly, how the hell can you transfer the mortgage of two town houses onto a trading restaurant and think that you can hold on to them if your business goes bust.

So there, I couldnt care less how nice they are, I couldnt care less how pretty they are and I certainly couldnt care less about their input to the restaurant trade in this country since they began.

I do however, feel so sorry for any employees that are now out of a job

I haven't a clue about the personalities behind the restaurant, it rarely crosses my mind to care (I don't read the Sindo for starters), but I'm sorry I won't get to eat at Bang any more. I used to like it.

I see Bang's back open - or at least the premises is. In reality it's a different business - new owners, management, chef...
From http://www.bangrestaurant.com/news_.aspx

Bang Café... has been purchased by a consortium which includes brother and sister, Anne and Joe Barrett and businessman and RTE Dragon's Den investor Bobby Kerr.

The new restaurant will offer ... an exciting new Menu which is priced for todays market...

Joe Barrett is leading the team operations. He is an industry veteran with 20 years experience in casual-dining restaurants in the USA. In his ten year tenure with Houstons Restaurants, he was involved in Operations, R&D, and New Concept Development. As an Operating Partner with Hops Grill and Bar, he developed the South Florida market and went on to become Vice President of Operations and R&D

Bobby Kerr, will lead the sales and promotion of the Café...

Heading up the management are Simon Barrett ex-Town Bar & Grill and Adrian O'Connor, ex Elephant & Castle & Real Gourmet Burger. Phil Yeung leads the Kitchen team as head chef.

How are things around anyway? Galway seems to be getting more openings and no failings that I can think.

Most people I speak to in the industry have had a better than expected 2010 so far. I'd to wait for a table in Juniors on Monday night and as I passed by the Chop House it was packed to the rafters so it can't be that bad!
I'm not so sure that there have been that many casualties of the recession in Dublin. Most of those restaurants who've closed have had other issues to contend with and perhaps may have run into trouble regardless of any downturn in business.

Cafe brothers' €146,000 spending revealed in court

MARY CAROLAN

JUST MONTHS before their Bang Cafe restaurant in Dublin went bust with debts of €2.4 million, brothers Simon and Christian Stokes were spending up to €146,000 of the company’s money for personal expenses incurred at top hotels, restaurants and stores in Ireland, London, Denmark, New York and Barbados, the High Court has heard.

Let me firstly say that I have zero respect for these guys and I agree with most of the sentiments expressed about them, but I do feel that they are being scapegoated. There are people in this country ( and some now reisdent in sunnier climes) who's actions brought about the collapse of the economy.
These pair of plums pale into insignificance in comparison yet the they make the front page of the Irish Times yesterday and another large piece in the business section. There are far worse acts happening every day in this country-especially in the construction industry but it doesn't make the front page because it's not so glamorous.
The way the courts are shaping up, it looks like there is a possibility of criminal convictions to follow...seems disproportionate to me.

Yup - a hundred-odd grand is neither here nor there in the grand scale of the problems facing Ireland.

I just think it's laughable (and not in a good way) how these guys were swanning around, splashing the cash as though they were big-timers, when actually, they haven't a pot to piss in.

Then again, it seems like a lot of people were doing that for the past decade anyway.
